When we moved to Winamac, Indiana, in August 2004, I did a search on the Barbershop Harmony Society website and discovered that there wasn't a chorus within 40 miles of our new home. There were, however, five choruses within 50 miles. For the first time, in my barbershop life, I had lots of choices. My original plan was to visit several choruses, and then pick the one I liked the best. After just one trip to sing with the Valparaiso Masters of Harmony, my search was over. I felt so welcomed, so much at home, it would have been odd to keep shopping for a chorus.
At the time, the VMOH was the largest chorus I had sung with on a regular basis. Singing with this group proved to be a immensely valuable experience. I was able to briefly sing with a new quartet—Just Us Guys—and I met lots of fantastic people and learned some great new music.
