Farmington, NM—April 24, 2003—Independent Mobility Systems announced today that it has completed work on a modification to its mobility conversion package that will allow the company to use DaimlerChrysler's factory-installed door motor when converting Chrysler and Dodge minivans for use as mobility vehicles.
The Chrysler Door Interface (CDI) project has been in the works for several months now. It allows the computer that controls the IMS conversion to communicate directly with the DaimlerChrysler door motor. The IMS philosophy is that components from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) are preferable to those that come from alternate suppliers. IMS has maintained the Chrysler OEM door opener on the sliding driver-side door since May 2001. These doors have proven to be extremely reliable in converted minivans.
According to Paul Edwards, IMS' engineering manager, one of the most obvious benefits of the CDI breakthrough is that IMS will not have to switch out a door motor on a Chrysler or Dodge minivan that came equipped with one. Using the OEM motor also means that IMS can configure the automatic door and ramp to be activated by the OEM remote control. This eliminates the need to carry two remote control fobs. The stock door motors are slightly slower than the ones IMS has been using, but this will not affect deployment speed of IMS' ramps, which are the fastest in the mobility industry.
The CDI changeover will be effective immediately, and will apply to all DaimlerChrysler vehicles with OEM passenger-side power doors sent to IMS for conversion.
