SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, April 10, 2000 -- Sorenson Vision Inc. announced today that it has restructured its business operations, creating four separate corporations: Sorenson Vision, Sorenson Media, Sorenson Visual Communications, and Sorenson Technologies. The four companies, all Utah corporations wholly owned by James L. Sorenson, Sr., will operate independently in their respective markets, while maintaining ties that will allow them to maximize new technologies and opportunities.
James Sorenson, Jr., vice chair of all four new companies, cites "leverage" as a major reason for the separation. "We had exciting things happening in so many areas, we wanted an overall strategy to leverage these opportunities," he says. "Restructuring into independent business units gives each team greater focus, plus the flexibility to brand their products appropriately for their individual markets."
Sorenson Media has at its core the organization's QuickTime products: Sorenson Video and Sorenson Broadcaster. Sorenson Video was the former company's first big success, and has become the QuickTime standard for online video delivery. Sorenson Broadcaster built on this success by providing the first and best solution for live QuickTime video and audio, quickly becoming the QuickTime tool of choice for such content providers as CNN, ABC News, and VH1. To these products the company will add services that will round out Sorenson Media as a full-service multimedia solution. James Sorenson, Jr., serves as Sorenson Media's acting chief executive officer. Sorenson Media's website is http://www.Sorenson.com.
Sorenson Vision will continue its role as a leading developer of Internet-based visual collaboration products and services. The company's main emphasis is on Sorenson EnVision, its award-winning desktop video conferencing system. EnVision delivers face-to-face communication through high-quality video and audio, enabling application and document sharing for a totally collaborative environment. In addition, EnVision conforms to H.323 standards, allowing connections across any IP network, including the Internet. M. Ray Brooksby serves as Sorenson Vision's chief operating officer. Sorenson Vision's website is http://www.SorensonVision.com.
Sorenson Visual Communications creates and markets highly integrated chips for video telephony and video conferencing applications. The company also implements next-generation MPEG-based technologies for multimedia communication. These multimedia technologies will take the form of ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits), ASIC cores, and software for embedded DSP (Digital Signal Processor) cores. Sorenson Visual Communications will license its multimedia technologies in the form of software and silicon cores. Lynn Blake has taken the interim role of chief operating officer until a permanent COO is found. Sorenson Visual Communications' website is http://www.SorensonVisual.com.
Sorenson Technologies is now the research arm of the other three companies, continuing its work developing proprietary and standards-based image compression, with special emphasis on H.263, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and DV implementations. The Technologies team will also actively pursue licensing opportunities with outside companies. Paul Israelsen acts as chief operating officer of Sorenson Technologies. In addition, Israelsen will serve in the unifying role as chief technology officer of the other three companies.
