General Dynamics, Sorenson Vision Team to Create Full-Featured Desktop Conferencing Solution

InfoWorkSpace Adds Sorenson Envision to Provide Low-Bandwidth Conferencing

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA, May 10, 2000 -- General Dynamics Electronic Systems announced today that it has joined forces with Sorenson Vision Inc. to add low-bandwidth desktop video conferencing capability to InfoWorkSpace, Electronic Systems's flagship collaboration software suite.

InfoWorkSpace, developed by Electronic Systems, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), provides government and commercial customers with an integrated suite of Web-based collaboration and conferencing tools. The product's features include instant messaging, voice-over IP (VOIP), text chat, whiteboarding, virtual file storage, online conferencing and Web presentations. Electronic Systems currently provides software, training and technical support to several corporate customers and large organizations in the Defense Department and national intelligence community. InfoWorkSpace is the collaborative software system of choice for the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Air Force's worldwide command and control operations.

Under the InfoWorkSpace Value-Added Reseller agreement, General Dynamics has added Sorenson EnVision(tm)--a high-quality, low-bandwidth business conferencing system – to its collaboration offerings. EnVision employs proprietary audio- and video-compression technology, motion compensation, and bandwidth control methods to deliver high-quality video images with as little as half the bandwidth of competing products. EnVision follows the H.323 Internet video conferencing standard for compatibility and interoperability with other H.323 products. In January, Sorenson released EnVision 1.5, enabling its product to operate on Windows NT systems.

"Data conferencing is the future of online collaboration," says Jay McConville, manager of sales and marketing for General Dynamics Collaborative Technologies and Products. "Until recently, video conferencing has been limited to Web cameras, low-quality desk-side tools, or high-bandwidth systems and connections. Sorenson EnVision is different--it provides high-quality video capability over business Internet connections and office networks. When our customers need desktop video conferencing, InfoWorkSpace can deliver one of the best solutions available."

"This alliance is not just great news for the two companies involved," said Ray Brooksby, Sorenson Vision's chief operating officer. "It's also great news for customers who have wanted--and needed--visual collaboration to do business. InfoWorkSpace is one of the strongest collaboration suites on the market, and we're pleased we're able to help keep InfoWorkSpace a step ahead of competition."

General Dynamics is now an official reseller of EnVision, offering it as a client-side application upgrade to the existing InfoWorkSpace package.
