Sorenson Ships EnVision 2.0

Sorenson's latest release of Envision is the most powerful, most flexible desktop conferencing system available

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, November 8, 2000 -- Sorenson Vision Inc. announced today that EnVision 2.0, the newest version of its flagship video conferencing product, is available and shipping.

Sorenson EnVision provides face-to-face collaboration to anyone with a PC and an Internet connection or phone line. In addition to high-quality video and audio, EnVision boasts an assortment of productivity tools to enable people to work together in real time, regardless of the distance between them. Headlining the list of enhancements for version 2.0 are a Universal Serial Bus (USB) model and modem-to-modem conferencing.

The rise of USB connectivity, a standard pioneered by Intel Corporation, has sparked the proliferation of USB peripherals as an alternative to PCI. EnVision USB offers quick installation and easy portability with any USB-enabled computer. Finally--laptop users have a high-quality, low-bandwidth conferencing product that lets them stay connected to their colleagues whether they are in the office or on the road.

The IP-conferencing standard, H.323, provides for video conferencing over local and wide area networks and the Internet. Another standard, H.324, allows direct modem-to-modem connections, and is a viable alternative when an IP network is not available. EnVision 2.0 offers both H.323 and H.324 compatibility in a single product, adding an additional degree of flexibility not found in any other product on the market.

EnVision offers several advantages over its competitors, which include Polycom's ViaVideo and VCON's ViGO. Because EnVision comes in both USB and PCI flavors, it can be used with Windows 95 and NT--as well as 98 and 2000. Other systems set processor minimums at 300 mHz and higher, while EnVision provides high-quality video conferencing on Pentium computers as slow as 90 mHz. Though EnVision looks and sounds great at 128 kilobits per second (kbps) and above, the product also runs surprisingly well on connections from 64 down to 28.8 kbps.

"We recognize that users have other options when it comes to video conferencing," says Ray Brooksby, Sorenson Vision's chief operating officer. To be competitive, Brooksby asserts, Sorenson had to create value by providing better products at comparable prices. "Nobody else even comes close in video and audio quality, ease of use and installation, range of features and options. EnVision is simply the best conferencing endpoint on the planet."

The EnVision 2.0 software is compatible with previous EnVision hardware. Users who purchased EnVision 1.0 or 1.5 can download the software upgrade free from Sorenson Vision's website. An upgrade pack, including a software CD and installation guide, is available for $5, plus shipping and handling.

Sorenson EnVision 2.0 is available directly from Sorenson, or through the company's extensive reseller network. Sorenson's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $899.
